With the help of her faithful Great Dane, a young girl achieved a remarkable milestone after nine years of struggle.
Bella Burton, an 11-year-old resident of WoƄurn, Massachusetts, was born with Morquio Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that stunts bone growth and limits movement. Despite enduring over ten surgeries and countless physical therapies, Bella found it difficult to walk without crutches or a wheelchair.
Enter George, a 130-pound Great Dane service dog from the Service Dog Project in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Trained to assist individuals with severe balance and mobility challenges, George became Bella’s constant companion, transforming her life.
Standing at the same height as Bella but weighing three times as much, George’s presence changed everything. The Service Dog Project has provided nearly 100 Great Danes to people facing various mobility issues, significantly enhancing their quality of life.
From children to military veterans and those with conditions like multiple sclerosis, each dog is meticulously trained to meet the specific needs of their owner. For Bella, George’s impact surpassed any other therapy she had received in the past year.
George had become Bella’s crutch, not only aiding her physical mobility but also offering emotional support. Bella shared how George would stand steadfastly if she fell, not moving until she regained her balance.
Bella’s newfound freedom extended to playground activities and bike rides, facilitated by George’s watchful presence. Their heartwarming story resonated globally, and their journey was chronicled on their Facebook page.
Recognizing George’s exceptional impact, the American Kennel Club awarded him the Canine Excellence Award. This accolade acknowledges canines that significantly influence the lives of their owners and communities. Beyond being Bella’s support, George became her cherished friend, demonstrating the incredible bond between humans and dogs.
Dogs have been “man’s best friend” for millennia, and their amazing qualities go beyond companionship. These beloved four-legged creatures continue to inspire us with their unwavering loyalty, support, and boundless love.
