This species is in danger of extinction.

The corpse of an animal that has inhabited the Earth since prehistoric times was found on  Assateague Island , between the states of Maryland and Virginia.

This is the Atlantic sturgeon,  a fish whose species has not changed or evolved for millions of years , specifically since the Cretaceous period. Sturgeons, which belong to the family Acipenseridae, are considered “living fossils.”

It is not uncommon for the current to have swept the animal towards Assateague, since sturgeons are found in the Atlantic Ocean, between Canada and the state of Florida. However, the birth and first moments of life of these animals are in freshwater rivers and they only start their route towards the sea when they get old, explained the  National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration  (NOAA, its acronym in English).

NOAA warned that the presence of boats, the increase in fishing and the destruction of their natural habitat makes these fish endangered. According to the entity, most sturgeons live in the  St. John River  in Canada, where an estimated 18,000 to 21,000 of them inhabited between 2013 and 2015.
